Debs And The Vocal Academy
Debs was brought up in south Wales and started singing at the early age of four. At the age of 11, she took part in her first full stage production and straight away got a love for the theatre and music. At the age of 14, Debs took her first lead as Maria in The Sound of Music with only 2 hours notice and sight-read the entire role from the wings. She began to compete in several Welsh music festivals (called Eisteddfods) which gave her a great platform for learning what to do and not do on the stage! Over the years Debs has won over 50 awards in competition.
Debs read music at Huddersfield University and went on to further vocal training at the Scottish Conservatoire of Music in Glasgow. Where part of her studies involved a module called Techniques of Singing specifically designed for singers who wanted to become singing teachers.
After completing her studies Debs went on to perform professionally in a variety of ways. “I was very fortunate to be performing in some capacity nearly every week. Now, I try to pass onto others what I have learnt from my own experiences within the music industry.”
A former member of the BBC National Chorus of Wales and has sung in numerous concerts, broadcasts and recordings both in this country and abroad including last night of the proms and a Christmas Doctor Who concert that stared David Tennet and was conducted by Murray Gould. As a soloist she has sung in various concerts, musicals, appeared live on radio, cabaret, weddings and in Opera. Some of her roles include Frasquita in Carmen, Despina in Cosi Van Tutti, Rosina in The Barber of Saville, Zerlina in Don Giovanni, Flora in La Travita and more recently Doralee in the musical Nine to Five. Debs also works as a freelance musical director for various choirs and theatre companies including the Billericay Community Choir.
Debs is also a fully qualified music teacher and obtained her P.G.C.E. in Secondary Education from the University of East London and was a former Head of Music at a school in Thurrock. She has been involved with music for nearly 40 years and has a wealth of experience to pass on to her students.

What Our Students Say
Posted on musickatieTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Started taking lessons last year to improve singing breathwork and to try and get rid of a long-standing ‘bubble’ in my voice. This week I did my first full solo gig. The voice lasted, no croaking or left over strain the next day, and I completely forgot about the ‘bubble’ which has plagued my performances for years. I now feel I can trust my voice for solos and all sorts. Thanks Debs!Posted on Yazz Tisi (YazzMaTazz)Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. I've been learning piano with Debs for almost 3 years. She's a fantastic teacher, incredibly friendly, helpful and patient. I never feel under pressure and learn at my own pace. When I first started lessons I couldn't play a thing, I'm now learning grade 3-4 music!Posted on Gwenno PopeTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Debs has been giving my 11 year old daughter 1:1 singing lessons over zoom for the last 3 years. We originally started lessons during lockdown and have kept them going as my daughter loves them so much. Debs is always patient and kind and my daughter never feels berated or uncomfortable. She finds the lessons enjoyable and the improvement in her vocal technique and confidence has been vast since working with Debs. She has achieved high marks in three singing grade exams and also got cast in a West end role. Thank you so much to the Vocal Academy!
